Curriculum Summary
Written by Dr. Marcie Zinn

Of course, as the site says, we give piano lessons to adults! We give every adult a 45-minute piano lesson weekly. However, we do a lot more than just having you read music and count out loud. Please read on:

In addition to the private piano lesson, Piano For Adults offers music instruction using leading-edge musical technologies in all aspects of piano learning and performance, including EMG Biofeedback, video-assisted instruction, immediate feedback with CBMI (computer-based music instruction) and the latest in stress-reduction technology. Using research in science and education, we continually refine what we do to deliver the best possible outcome.

Our approach to you, the client, has been crafted through the best practices of world-class music instruction plus psychology and neuroscience. We know how to interact with our clients to support their best selves. We know you have come to us to grow in your music education and we do everything possible to support that growth.

Marcie and Mark Zinn have studied with the worlds' leading pianists and are advanced classical pianists themselves. HOWEVER, they know that others are not as interested in advanced classical music as they are. To that end, they only teach it to those who share that viewpoint. For the rest of us, they teach the style that the student wishes to master. Some of these styles they routinely teach are:

* Popular music
* Lead Sheet style (using chord symbols instead of notated bass line)
* Jazz
* Blues
* Gospel
* Religious music
* "oldies but goodies"
* ethnic music

The above list is not exhaustive. We help the student to devise their own educational plan and revise it as their needs may change. We do not simply "play & count," but teach people how to make music happen, and most of all, how to play the music they hear in their head. Here's a short list of some of our teaching paradigms:

* learn to play music 'by ear,' or significantly use one's 'ear' when playing (avoid simple note reading)
* learn to take a musical score, learn it from the notes on the page, and bring it to fluency (fluid playing)
* learn to read chord symbols (optional--not everyone wants this)
* play with good technique--work on the physical part so as to hone the actual motor movements to play the pieces
* adapt technique to the particular style one is playing--NOT "one size fits all."
* learn music theory so the theory is always relevant and understood.
* develop some performance techniques, if warranted*
* work on negative thoughts so as not to interfere with learning

* some do not wish to play for others. We respect everyone's point of view, and NEVER call upon adults to play in situations that may embarrass them. We are here to teach performance skills, if that is what one wants.
