If you're new to piano instruction, you'll find that PFA delivers sophisticated solutions to your personal needs. We can deliver instruction to you that is tailored to your individual desires and other situational factors that affect you uniquely. Finding time to practice is always an issue. You have a family, a job, and personal responsibilities. We can help you learn piano despite your busy schedule and we can adjust your homework to fit what you are doing.
So what's the catch? I've talked to others who took piano lessons and they did little more than practice playing and counting rhythm out loud--which they reported as drudgery!
Well, there's good news ... we do not just teach you to "play and count." As a matter of fact, playing & counting alone does little to produce musical competency. We will use a variety of teaching techniques, all of which are aimed at producing fun and musical competency at the same time. Playing & counting is very little of what you actually have to do; most of what you do you will find exciting and intriguing.
Are you saying I can learn to play "by ear?"
Yes, learning to play 'by ear' is part of what we do. Some people request it more than others, but everyone learns to do some of it--even if it seems like you have a poor ear.
But what if you expect me to be able to do something that I cannot do?
You don't need to be up to any sort of ability level to learn here. We'll go from the ground up when necessary. We work with where you are, teaching musical understanding all along the way. Most of all, we'll teach you musical independence--to not need us at a future date. However, we are continually checking to see if our help really is help to you; when it is not, we adjust.
I've heard that adult brains can change through experience, but also know that they are still not nearly as changeable as children's brains. Does that affect my ability to learn?
You're right. Adult brains are changeable, but are also stable (kid brains are largely not stable). However, take a step back and look at this for a moment--music instruction is perfectly understandable if presented correctly and practiced. You are not doing something on the level of learning a foreign language or picking up advanced math for the first time. It really is just music. If you don't learn, you'll be the first we've seen in 38 years.
